For those who have been following my YouTube channel, you know how much I enjoy art. It has helped me get through some of my most toughest times in life which is why I enjoy it so much. After my guinea pig passed away, I naturally found myself gravitating towards art to comfort my aching heart. The results were amazing as I realized my love for drawing realistic animals; sparking the idea to start offering pet portraits on Etsy.
I have always been told to start my own Etsy shop and to offer pet portraits, but I never believed in my skills enough to make it happen. After many years of working on my skills as a self-taught artist though, I finally decided to open one. I figured it would be a great way for me to help other pet lovers like myself appreciate their beloved pets, while also be able to practice my skills.
You may be wondering, what does SMLPETPORTRAITS mean? It's quite simple really because it's just my initials plus Pet Portraits. I was having a hard time coming up with a name for my shop so I decided to stick with this name. I could change it somewhere down the line but for now I'll stick with it and see how it does.
Since each portrait is realistic and digitally drawn using Procreate, I spend about 6-10 hours on each portrait. It depends on the complexity of the pets fur, demand, or even how many pets will be included in one portrait. For now, I only offer two options on my shop to help me be able to focus on each portrait one at a time, rather than having multiple listings that could take away the quality.
Anyone who is interested in purchasing a custom pet portrait from me, I would simply draw your pet using a provided photo. Once the portrait is finished and approved of, the final digital file is sent and can be printed out on many different sized papers or canvases even. There are also endless revisions prior to approval to ensure that the best portrait is being offered in the end.
I do offer a multiple pet portrait option for anyone looking to have all of their pets together. The process is fairly the same, except a picture of all pets would be submitted to me before I start. Multiple pet portraits will take longer to complete compared to single pet portraits and may require several days to complete.
I also have intentions to open my own website to direct buy customers. With the huge backlash Etsy has received about their fees and the sellers going on strike, I know it's best to not rely on Etsy. I hope to use it mostly as a boost until my own website is up and running.
They say Artists find ways to channel their deepest emotions to create their best work. I can honestly say with everything going on in my life and the pain of losing a pet after 9 years being together, I understand this now. As hard as it has all been, it has helped me once again fall in love with art.
I hope through my pet portraits, I can help pet lovers all around the world cherish their beloved pets for years to come. They love us through every moment of our lives, creating wonderful memories, and I hope to capture all of their personalities, one portrait at a time.
Until next time - Sarah
